Chemical peels: match the depth to the concern

A peel can range from superficial exfoliation to a procedure requiring substantial recovery. Know which is proposed.

Ask for the procedure, not just the brand

Chemical peels use a solution to create a controlled effect on skin layers. A superficial peel and a deeper peel involve different recovery and risk. Ask for the agent, intended depth and reason it was chosen for your skin. A product name alone is not enough to compare two offers.

Possible goals include selected pigment, texture or acne-related concerns. The clinician should first establish the diagnosis and explain what the peel will not address. A peel is not a replacement for investigating an unexplained skin change.

Prepare around your skin history

Tell the clinician about previous peels, laser treatment, cold sores, raised scars and any tendency to develop dark marks. Bring a list of medicines and active skin-care products. Ask for individual preparation instructions; do not stop prescription medicine without speaking to the prescriber.

Peels can cause redness, irritation, pigment changes, infection or scarring. Skin color and the depth of treatment affect the assessment. The AAD recommends asking about the clinician’s experience treating people with your skin coloring and whether another treatment would be a better choice.

Fit recovery into the actual trip

Before booking, obtain written directions for washing, prescribed products, sun protection and follow-up. Ask when makeup and usual activities are appropriate for the exact peel. Clarify what level of peeling or discomfort is expected and how to obtain an examination if the reaction seems excessive.

A short holiday with outdoor activities may not fit a procedure that needs careful protection and review. You can choose to delay, use a less intensive option if clinically suitable, or focus on a diagnosis and home-care plan. Request an itemized cost covering the consultation, procedure, any required products and review. Avoid buying a course before learning how your skin responds to the first step.

  • What depth is planned, and why is it appropriate?
  • Which parts of my usual skin-care routine should pause and for how long?
  • When should unexpected pain, blistering or discoloration be assessed?
