Botulinum toxin: a considered plan for expression lines

Understand temporary muscle effects, the importance of product sourcing and what to do if symptoms are concerning.

Start with movement, not a package

Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces activity in targeted muscles. It can soften selected expression lines, but it does not address every cause of a fold, sagging skin or loss of volume. The consultation should include your facial movement and the change you want while speaking and smiling.

Ask which product and areas the clinician proposes. “Botox” is often used conversationally for the category, but it is a brand name. Request the actual product name rather than accepting a generic label, particularly when comparing quotations.

Product sourcing and clinical assessment matter

The CDC advises using a properly licensed, trained provider and authentic products from authorized sources. Treatment can cause unwanted weakness or drooping. Rarely, toxin effects beyond the intended site can produce serious symptoms. Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing or swallowing, generalized weakness or other signs of botulism after an injection.

Discuss your medical history, medicines, previous reactions and prior injection dates before treatment. Tell the clinician if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a condition affecting muscles or nerves. The provider should decide whether treatment is appropriate; an online offer cannot make that assessment.

Plan review rather than immediate extra treatment

Ask when the effect should be assessed and how the clinic handles asymmetry or an unwanted result. Do not arrange your decision around photographs taken directly after injection. Agree on a follow-up route that still works if you have returned home.

Keep the product name, treating clinician, date and treatment record. When requesting a quote, clarify whether it describes a defined area or a quantity, and what the review includes. Ask the clinician to explain differences between proposed products rather than assuming that prices or labeled units can be compared without context. You can choose a conservative plan, postpone treatment or leave expression lines untreated.

  • Which movement are we trying to change, and what should remain?
  • What is the exact product and where was it obtained?
  • Who should assess an unexpected effect once I leave Seoul?
