Active acne: build a treatment plan before treating the marks

Understand medical acne care, what to bring to a Seoul consultation and how to continue treatment after your visit.

Start with the breakouts you have now

Acne care begins with assessment of the active condition. A scar or pigmentation package will not necessarily control new breakouts. Tell the doctor whether you have blackheads, inflamed spots, deep painful lumps, or marks left after previous spots. Bring photographs showing changes over time, especially if your skin looks calmer on the appointment day.

An appointment is also a chance to discuss how acne affects your comfort, confidence and daily life. A clinician can consider those concerns alongside severity and the risk of further scarring.

Medical options and their limits

Treatment can include topical medicines such as benzoyl peroxide or retinoids, and selected oral medicines when appropriate. The AAD acne guideline supports several options rather than a single procedure for everyone. Antibiotics require a considered plan; severe or difficult acne may warrant discussion of isotretinoin and its monitoring requirements.

Medicines have different precautions. Disclose pregnancy, pregnancy plans, breastfeeding, allergies and all current prescriptions before receiving a plan. Do not change an existing prescription simply to prepare for a cosmetic appointment. Ask the prescribing clinician how your present treatment fits with any proposed procedure.

Make a short Seoul visit useful

If you are visiting briefly, ask whether the clinic offers ongoing medical acne management or mainly aesthetic services. Establish who will review your response after you leave. Request the generic names of prescribed medicines, written directions and a record you can share with your usual clinician.

Compare the complete plan rather than the price of one facial. Separate the consultation, medicines, any proposed procedures and follow-up charges. You can choose medical treatment first and reconsider scar work later.

  • Which problem are we treating first: active acne, discoloration or a true scar?
  • What should I do if the medicine irritates my skin?
  • When should the response be assessed, and who can change the prescription?
