Acne scars: match the method to the scar

Separate changes in texture from discoloration and compare the treatment plan, recovery demands and follow-up.

Texture and color need different assessments

A flat brown or red mark after a breakout is different from an indentation or a raised scar. Ask the clinician to identify what is present before selecting a device. Several scar patterns can coexist on the same face, so an offer for one laser session may describe only part of the work you are considering.

The goal is usually improvement in appearance, not complete removal. Treating scars is optional. Your own priorities, willingness to accept recovery and ability to return are part of a reasonable treatment decision.

Why the plan may combine methods

A dermatologist may consider resurfacing, microneedling, carefully selected fillers, minor procedures or other approaches according to scar type. Raised scars require a different approach from depressed scars. Skin color, active acne and previous abnormal scarring also affect the choice. The AAD explains that individualized plans may use more than one treatment.

Ask what each proposed step contributes. A package should explain the problem being targeted, how progress will be assessed and when a further procedure would be considered. Additional treatments are not automatically better if they add risk without addressing a specific finding.

Choose around recovery and continuity

Procedures can cause redness, swelling, infection, pigmentation changes or new scarring; the relevant risks depend on the method. Tell the doctor about previous laser reactions and a tendency to develop raised scars. Ask for examples relevant to your skin type without treating photographs as a promise of your result.

For a Seoul visit, obtain a written schedule that distinguishes the treatment day, wound care, review and later assessment. Confirm whether further sessions can be continued near home and what records another clinician would need. Ask for the total estimated course and the option to pause after an initial assessment.

  • Which scar types do I have, and which will this procedure leave unchanged?
  • Should active breakouts be controlled first?
  • What complication requires an in-person review before I travel?
